NFL Game Summary - Chicago At Denver

POSTED: 9:27 pm EST November 23, 2003

Kordell Stewart ran for a touchdown and Paul Edinger tied a career-high by kicking four field goals to lead Chicago to a 19-10 win over Denver at Invesco Field.

Stewart, in relief of starting quarterback Chris Chandler, completed 7-of-15 passes for 47 yards for the Bears (4-7), who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to snap a 12-game road losing streak and two-game skid overall.

Chandler, who left the game with a shoulder injury, completed 8-of-18 passes for 79 yards.

"Kordell played like a professional," Chicago coach Dick Jauron said. "He didn't let his teammates down. His mobility poses problems for defenses."

Clinton Portis finished with 165 rushing yards on 14 carries for the Broncos (6-5), who lost for the fourth time in five games.

Jake Plummer completed 20-of-35 passes for 176 yards -- including a one-yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith -- for Denver, which was without suspended linebacker Darryl Gardener.

Smith finished with 10 receptions for 86 yards.

Stewart's one-yard scoring run 2:15 into the fourth quarter on fourth down put Chicago ahead for good. The quarterback completed 6-of-7 passes for 36 yards and ran for two yards on third down to extend the 15-play, 55-yard series.

A 47-yard field goal by Edinger then opened a 19-10 advantage for the Bears with 8:46 to go.

"I feel real happy for this team," Jauron said. "It certainly has played hard enough all season, but hasn't really been rewarded."

The Broncos lined up for a 47-yard field goal attempt with less than four minutes remaining, but holder Micah Knorr fumbled the snap and his pass was deflected near the line of scrimmage.

"Obviously, I didn't do a very good job getting our football team prepared," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said. "I thought we had a great week of preparation and I felt good about the game going into it, and I am very disappointed in myself that we didn't play better than we did."

Denver went ahead 7-0 on Smith's one-yard touchdown catch with 3:59 left in the first quarter. Plummer completed 4-of-5 passes for 21 yards during the 12- play, 78-yard drive.

Edinger's 33-yard field goal 2:28 later pulled Chicago within 7-3.

The Broncos had a chance to extend their lead late in the second quarter after a 59-yard run by Portis. But Elam's 40-yard field goal attempt missed right with 5:28 remaining.

Two field goals by Edinger late in the second quarter staked the Bears to a 9-7 halftime lead.

A defensive pass interference on Lenny Walls gave the Bears 45 yards and helped them get inside the Denver one-yard line. However, a false-start penalty forced Edinger to kick a 23-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the second. The kick capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive.

Edinger then tied a career-high with a 54-yard kick with three seconds remaining in the quarter. Chandler completed three throws, including a seven- yarder to Desmond Clark that set up the score.

Early in the third quarter, Portis broke off a 49-yard run. Elam converted it into a 25-yard field goal 3:19 into the third to put the Broncos ahead 10-9.
